Background[edit | edit source]
Charles Smith was a citizen of Hawaii with family ties in Virginia. If he had been allowed to do so, he would have fought for the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War.
Appearances[edit | edit source]
Charles argued with Robert Farrington, who had served in the Union Navy, about the politics of the Civil War and about Emily's hand.
Charles came to believe that Robert had concluded that Okumichi no kami Genji and Emily had an intimate relationship, that Emily was pregnant, and that Genji had ordered Taro to kill Emily before her condition became obvious. Charles attacked Robert because he deemed Robert's thoughts to be a blot on Emily's character. Charles later told Emily that her love for Genji was obvious.
