Background[edit | edit source]

Sohaku was the abbot of Mushindo Monastery. He had previously been known as Tanaka Hidetada and had been the commander of cavalry of Lord Okumichi no kami Kiyori. He had been one of Okumichi no kami Kiyori's generals and had continued in that position for Genji.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

In July 1860, Okumichi no kami Kiyori ordered Tanaka Hidetada to take his best cavalrymen and retreat into a monastery, apparently as a protest against Kiyori's befriending of the Missionaries.

On January 1, 1861, Sohaku was disturbed during his morning meditations by the laughter of the monks, including Taro. He ordered Taro to take breakfast to Lord Shigeru.

He turned traitor.
